Mortal Kombat X: Faction Wars Sounds Like a Great Progression for the Fighting Franchise
NetherRealm Studios recently announced some new details regarding Mortal Kombat X. The release of the highly anticipated sequel is nearly here, some of the new features for the fighting game sound intriguing. However, I am most excited about the Faction Wars, the coolest new aspect about the game. This new feature allows players choose from certain factions for the Mortal Kombat experience and appears to be a great way to progress the gameplay of the fighting franchise.
Basically, when a players start the game of Mortal Kombat X, that player can choose from several factions in Mortal Kombat storyline canon: the ninjas of the Lin Kuei, the Brotherhood of Shadow, Special Forces, and the White Lotus. The faction wars will offer a competitive aspect to the gameplay. In addition, players will be able to level up and unlock rewards. Unlocks and rewards are elements that NetherRealm Studios knows how to incorporate very well. Injustice: Gods Among Us did a great job of providing players unlockable rewards by allowing them to compete in online play or complete various game-based challenges or objectives in the game. This is also the case for the mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Some nice unlockable rewards could be some alternate character skins for the Kombatants.
Another exciting aspect of the Faction Wars includes invasion. NetherRealm Studios described an instance of a 24 hour period where player factions will be invaded by the forces of Outworld or the NetherRealm. I am curious to see the extent in which this will be implemented in the actual gameplay. Will it offer a specific set of new challenges? Will Kombatants simply have to face stronger computer AI bots? Execution for that feature will be significant, and it sounds like an exciting new way to evolve and modernize the Mortal Kombat franchise.
Over time, I would like to see the game offer some additional factions, perhaps via DLC. Another great feature could involve a renegade faction of rogue Kombatants who really answer to know one. I would also like to see a Shokan faction, which would feature Kintaro as a new playable character. It is time for Kintaro to be playable in a new Mortal Kombat game.
Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
