Mortal Kombat X: Kung Lao is Another Great Addition
The word is out, and Kung Lao is one of the official classic characters who will appear in Mortal Kombat X. His appearance in the game was leaked by the Finnish video gaming magazine Pelaaja (via the Test Your Might forums). Since the game takes place 25 years into the future of the Mortal Kombat universe, Kung Lao has become noticeably older. Kung Lao, as one of the classic characters of the franchise, is another great addition to the Mortal Kombat X roster.
Kung Lao’s presence in the game is certainly interesting. The specific reason for that is because Kung Lao was murdered in Mortal Kombat 9. Shao Kahn killed Kung Lao after snapping his neck. Later on, Kung Lao was resurrected as an undead revenant by the sorcerer and necromancer Quan Chi. I hope this means other characters who died in Mortal Kombat 9 might also be able to come back from the dead and not necessarily as a part of Quan Chi’s undead revenant army. One of the things I am really looking forward to for Mortal Kombat X is the story campaign mode and what it will mean for the fallen characters from the last game. As I pointed out in a previous Explosion article, a recent Quan Chi video for Mortal Kombat X indicated that Quan Chi will have an undead army of fallen Earthrealm warriors. My hope is that some of the fallen warriors will be freed from Quan Chi’s control and gain some resurrection help from the thunder god Raiden.
According to a translation of the Pelaaja article, Kung Lao will be a fully playable character in Mortal Kombat X. In addition, Kung Lao will have some different gameplay variations that will apparently be the most diverse for any character in the game. His variations include: Tempest; Buzz Saw; and Hat Trick. In addition, his new hat design looks interesting. Kung Lao’s trademark, bladed hat has always been one of his weapons. The screenshots for the Pelaaja article show his new hat, which looks like it is a jagged buzz saw with multiple serrated edges, instead of a smooth bladed-edged hat. The good news is that with the gameplay variations for Kung Lao, his look can be changed to his more traditional, smooth-edged hat design.
Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
